Back in June we added a new feature called Archived Application to our beta program. Today, we are excited to announced that Archived Application is now released to general availability.

Archived Application Overview

Archived Applications allows developers to "park" their application at any time. Archiving an application saves the configuration and state of your deployment, turns your servers off, and puts your application in a state of deep-freeze. You don't pay for Archived Applications, which is great if your project hasn't commenced.

Once ready, restore the application, and it comes back to life. It's as simple as that!

Archived Application Use Cases

Through the beta program we have identified the following use cases:

  • It's a useful feature for web development agencies and e-commerce shops. While your team is working on applications for clients, your projects may start and stop many times before truly kicking-off. You might start by building a prototype or a demo before getting sign-off. As we all know, getting sign-off from a client can take time! Archived Application allows your team to "park" the application while you're waiting for approval, the first payment, and for the true kickstart of the project.
  • This is a helpful feature for seasonal projects that you know will only be active for a short period of time - e.g. a sport event like Wimbledon - but will be needed again next year.
  • Another use for Archived Applications is to use them as "Application Templates": build the entire application setup, archive it and use it as the base to clone more applications, ensuring consistency and best practices across your applications.

Please share how you're using the Archived Applications feature and let us know if you have found another use case.
