We are excited to announce support for Ubuntu 26.04 LTS Resolute Raccoon on all Cloud 66 products, including registered servers.
From this point onward, new applications are provisioned on Ubuntu 26.04 by default, on both x86_64 and ARM64. Don't forget, you can control your target Ubuntu version via the selection dropdown when scaling up via the UI, or through your manifest!
Ubuntu 26.04 is a Long-Term Support (LTS) release, published on 23 April 2026, and will receive ongoing app updates and critical security fixes until May 2031. For everything that changed upstream, see the official release notes.
What happens to my existing applications?
Nothing changes until you ask for it. Scaling up an existing application follows the group of servers you're scaling: a group of web servers still entirely on 24.04 gets another 24.04 server, even if another group in the same application has already moved to 26.04. The rule only stops us introducing 26.04 into a server group that doesn't have it yet — once a single server in a group runs 26.04, new servers in that group get 26.04 too.
Ubuntu 26.04 arrives in an existing application in one of three ways: you pick it in the scale-up dialog, you declare operating_system: ubuntu2604 in your manifest, or the group of servers you're scaling already runs it.
Two kinds of server stay where they are. MongoDB server groups remain on Ubuntu 24.04, because MongoDB publishes no packages for resolute yet; the rest of your application can still move. Classic Docker/Node (CSv1) applications remain on Ubuntu 22.04, because their underlying components aren't compatible with newer operating systems. They will unfortunately be retired when Ubuntu 22.04 passes its End-Of-Life in May 2027.

What version do I have running now?
You can find the operating system version of a server by drilling down into the server detail page and clicking the link to see more information.
How to upgrade?
Due to differences at an operating system level, it isn't possible to perform an in-place upgrade. Moving to 26.04 means scaling up a new server: choose Ubuntu 26.04 from the operating system dropdown when you scale up, and the new server is provisioned on it.
If your application has a manifest file that declares an operating system, we'll use whatever the manifest says — unless you pick a different version in the scale-up dropdown, which always wins.
Move one group of servers at a time. Scale up a 26.04 server alongside the group you're migrating, confirm your application behaves the way you expect, then retire the older servers.
Servers on Ubuntu 22.04 (and below)
Users with servers that are still on Ubuntu 22.04 (or below) should be thinking about migrating to Ubuntu 26.04. This is because Ubuntu 22.04 will reach End-Of-Life (EOL) for standard patch support in May 2027. Although Cloud 66 will endeavor to keep those running, upstream dependency changes could make that impossible at any point beyond that date.
